Kaddisfly is an American band based in Portland, Oregon whose style has been dubbed experimental and alternative.
The band formed in 2001, taking their name from a small moth-like insect, the Caddisfly. Their lyrics are mostly based around natural settings and powers made of human spirit, an unusual trait among bands on the modern rock scene.
After several independent releases, the band signed to Hopeless Records in 2004 and released Buy Our Intention; We’ll Buy You a Unicorn through the label on March 8, 2005.
Kaddisfly has been a very active touring band, having embarked on multiple nation wide tours between 2003 and 2008. Most notably, they performed on the 2007 Take Action Tour with Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Emery, Scary Kids Scaring Kids, and A Static Lullaby. They also performed on the Smart Punk Stage as part of the 2007 Vans Warped Tour.
Kaddisfly’s latest album, entitled Set Sail the Prairie, was released on March 6, 2007. The album features 14 tracks, 12 of which are assigned to a specific month (all titled in various foreign languages) of the year, as well as two that are named after the summer and winter solstices found on the Gregorian Calendar. It was originally scheduled to come out September 2006, but due to circumstances out of their control the date was pushed back. To temporarily satisfy the disappointed fans who were patiently awaiting the album’s release, the band released an EP sampler called ‘The Four Seasons EP’ on October 24, 2006. The EP includes one song from each season of ‘Set Sail The Prairie’, as well as a B-side entitled ‘Games’ which is a commentary on the current state of music.
In 2007, due to requests from a growing fanbase, the band repressed ‘Did You Know People Can Fly?’ for those people who missed out during 2003-2005, when copies of the album were available for purchase. It went on sale December 18. There were a limited amount pressed, and it is said to be the last pressing of the album in its original form.
The band took a short break in December 2007 when drummer Beau Kuther ruptured his ear drum and required surgery. Members spent the short hiatus practicing and working menial jobs. They resumed their touring schedule the following February, and have remained in Portland, Oregon since returning in May 2008.
As of October 18, 2008 bassist Kile Brewer decided to leave the band on good terms for a more stable lifestyle and possible solo releases.
From Kaddisfly’s Official Myspace Thursday, December 18: There are winds of change in the Kaddisfly camp, and as with the nation, it’s time we move forward. First off, we should apologize for not keeping you all updated properly over the last 5 months, but quite honestly there wasn’t much to talk about until we knew exactly what we wanted to say. Some of you may or may not know that Kile Brewer has left Kaddisfly. His departure came late in the summer and was not all that unexpected. Kile moved to Denver with his wife and wanted to start a new chapter in his life. We are still very close with Kile and we wish him the best in all his future endeavors. As Kaddisfly we may very well end up finishing horses galloping one day, but for now I suppose the popular thing to say would be we are on a small hiatus. There will always be our back catalog, and our internet presence will remain the same because Kaddisfly isn’t dead, just hibernating. We also still have some unreleased material that may surface at some point. Christopher Ruff, Beau Kuther, Kelsey Kuther, and Aaron Tollefson have started a new band called Water & Bodies based in Portland, OR. The music is said to be much different than that of Kaddisfly. Water & Bodies released their debut EP on May 15, 2009 as a download through Rain City Records.
